In addition to hundreds of independent ensembles, 129 publicly-financed orchestras currently provide a wide-ranging concert offer. The map shows the various types of publicly funded orchestras, including information on their sizes as well as on mergers and disbandments since 1990.
Publicly Funded Music Theatres
83 state, regional and municipal music theatres reveal an ambitious programming policy ranging from early to contemporary music. The German Theatre and Orchestra Association registers an average of 13,000 performances of operas, operettas, musicals and ballets every year, attended by almost eight million spectators. On our map, theaters are depicted with regard to the seating capacity of their principle venues.

In Germany, broadcasting is viewed as both a conveyor and a sponsor of culture. Public broadcasting corporations promote contemporary art music, organise music competitions and maintain their own ensembles.
